KEVIN HOUGHTAILING

NORTHEAST CHAPTER PRESIDENT 2019-2020

Kevin was born and raised in the Mayfield, NY area, where he attended the local schools until graduation from high school.

After graduation he attended RPI in Troy, NY.  He received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering.  During his years at RPI Kevin was involved with teaching and mentoring activities.  He was a Tutor and supervisor for Tutor Time, an RPI affiliated activity for tutoring K-12 students on any subjects they desired.  Additionally, Kevin was active in Engineering Summer Camps such as:

-Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp for Middle Schoolers

-NYS STEM Summer Program for Middle Schoolers

-PREFACE – A program for college bound students to visit RPI and reside in a dorm and experience what engineering school is like.

During Senior Week at RPI Kevin was recruited by EME Group Consulting Engineers in Albany, NY.  He started working EME in June of 2011.  His employment would encompass energy consulting, energy audits, commissioning and HVAC design.

Kevin's dream jobs would be to design cores of bowling balls or energy and environment related engineering.  The latter offered more opportunities and a broader career path.

Kevin has an ASHRAE Building Energy Assessment Professional Certification (BEAP) which validates competency to assess building systems and site conditions, analyze and evaluate equipment and energy usage, recommend strategies to optimize building resources.  It is ANSI accredited and recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Kevin was introduced to ASHRAE by David Houle of EME who got him involved with ASHRAE and appointed him the Research Promotion Chair where he received the Full Circle Award.  After a year as Chair of RP, Kevin was asked to step in as Vice President, followed by President Elect and President for 2019-2020.

He enjoys the fact the HVAC is always necessary and changing which makes it interesting.  Future involvement would be to serve on the Board of Governors for the chapter and maybe to do some additional committee work. Kevin would like to be remembered for working toward more active participation with related societies such as AEE and ASPE.

Kevin is single with a girlfriend and in his spare time, he likes bowling, soccer, volleyball, wooden bat baseball, hiking, and camping and nature activities.  Kevin played trumpet in band and sang in choir during grade school.  In college at RPI was co-founder of "Duly Noted" an all-male acapella group where he primarily sang bass and dabbled in arranging and vocal percussion.

We wish Kevin continued success in his career in HVAC and ASHRAE.

April 2019 Monthly Meeting

Spring has arrived! Come, join ASHRAE’s Northeast Chapter Tuesday, April 23rd at the Italian American Community Center. Our lunch meeting’s registration will begin at 11:30 am, with buffet style lunch opening @ 11:45 am, immediately followed by our presentation.

This Month’s Topic: Heat Pumps’ Role in the Transition Away from Fossil Fuels

As Presented By: Mr. John Ciovacco

Synopsis:

If equipment utilizing fossil fuels was no longer an option, how might that change your role as an engineer, system designer, equipment manufacturer, distributor, or mechanical contractor?  To achieve NYS’s energy and environmental goals, heat pumps are being written into NYS policy as the principal alternative to fossil fuel heating & hot water for buildings.  The reaction to ConEd’s Natural Gas Moratorium, effective March 15, 2019, has highlighted some of the challenges involved in a transition away from fossil fuels, and towards the electrification of buildings.  The NYS Department of Public Service has ordered utilities to develop programs with increased incentives for heat pumps, not only for reductions in fossil fuels but also for decreases in peak electric or peak gas demand.

Membership Promotion Message - April 2019

I would first like to take the time to formally introduce myself. My name is Jason Filler and I am proud to be the new ASHRAE Northeast Chapter Membership Promotion Committee Chair. I have only been a member of ASHRAE for a short time; however, I have seen firsthand the immense benefits of being part of such a great community. The network of industry experts, informative monthly meetings, and overall knowledge I have gained from being a member; make me excited to share our organization and strengthen our Northeast Chapter’s membership.

I plan to utilize my 6 years of local experience and networking in service and sales to not only increase membership but also enhance current membership. I look forward to working with all of you to grow our chapter through membership engagement, requesting and applying member feedback, tracking of membership renewals and upgrades, recruitment, networking, and hosting great events.

Lastly, we will be working on numerous events and outings for our chapter next year. Beyond the usual monthly meetings, we will be doing regular outings and events to further encourage member engagement. Some of these events will include trivia nights, happy hours and networking events. We will also make it a focus to recognize our lifetime members and their contributions to their fields.
