Welcome to the 2018-2019 season of ASHRAE activities. I hope that everyone had a fun and prosperous summer. Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Golf Outing at Western Turnpike and helped to make the event a success! We had 29 teams participate and over 100 members and guests in attendance for the awards dinner! A special thank you to all the donors of Tee Flags and Raffle Prizes, and to the volunteers who helped the day run smoothly.

 

 

2000px-FiretetrahedronsvgCome Join ASHRAE for our first lunch meeting of the season: Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at the Italian American Community Center. Registration starts at 11:30 AM, lunch and the presentation are set to begin at 11:45 AM. This month’s presentation will be on the topic of “Combustion Theory” as presented by Jody Samuell.

Jody Samuell is a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy with a degree in Marine Engineering. While at Maine Maritime he participated in the Navy ROTC program and received his commission as a Naval Officer on Graduation. He spent 10 years in the US Navy in the Submarine Service. After his time in the Navy, he entered into the Hydronics field. Over the past 20 plus years, he has worked for various companies including AMTROL, Viessmann and Caleffi serving in various roles including Product Manager, Training Manager, and Manager for Engineering Education. Currently, he serves as Application Engineer for Viessmann.

This presentation will explore the theory behind the efficient application of natural gas-fired condensing boilers. The following focus topics will be discussed:

  • Natural gas with air mixture for the most efficient combustion
  • Latent heat recovery as a product of flue gas condensation
  • Burner requirements and CO2 level control in relation to water temperatures for increased efficiency of boiler operation.
  • We will also discuss boiler and system piping layout strategies for minimizing operational costs while maximizing the efficiency of operation. In addition, we will elaborate on condensing boilers heat exchanger materials and design requirements.
